Winter Storage Hacks to help you make the most of Canada’s best season

This week we saw our first dump of snow in the GTA and we can’t avoid it any longer: Winter is here!

`Tis the season for tobogganing, hot chocolate and the Santa Clause parade. Make sure you get out there and enjoy all that winter has to offer. But of course, with the weather getting colder there’s no escaping the extra layers of socks, coats and boots that help you enjoy the winter wonderland.

At Green Storage Solutions we know that finding a place for all this extra gear can seem impossible. But we have some great winter storage hacks (and some “keeping cozy” hacks) to help you and your family make the most of the season.

  1. Winter Boots. There’s no avoiding it: winter boots are bulky and track water all over the house. There’s no end to the possibilities of boot storage – but here are our 3 favorite hacks to keep you mud room a little less muddy.

Cut up old pool noodles or recycle empty wine bottles and put them inside you boots to help them stand up straight. Avoid the falling tower of boots on the top of your shoe rack with this tip.

If you want to keep the shoe rack clean, use a baking sheet for better boot storage. Fill an old baking sheet with stones or pebbles to create a unique tray for catching drips. In the spring, easily hose off the pebbles and use them in your garden.

Out of sight, out of mind! Use a bench with storage in the seat to keep boots out of the way this winter. If you’re concerned about getting mud and water inside the bench, use the winter storage baking sheet hack for quick clean up.

  1. Instead of digging through a drawer for your favorite hat or other glove, easily display your winter gear in a hanging shoe rack. This great winter storage hack keeps your gear out of the way, yet easy to find. No more searching forever only to come up with two left-hand mittens.

  2. One thing you won’t want to have handy is your summer clothes. Gather up all that seasonal gear and vacuum seal it for next year. This is a great solution because it a) cuts down on space, and b) protects your clothes from any natural pests or mildew. Vacuum seal bags are easy to find at any home goods store – or, you can make your own here http://bit.ly/2hxWPlY

  3. Shoveling snow is a rite of passage for any Canadian kid. It’s also a great thing you can do for your neighbor to keep the sidewalks clear and safe. Re-use PVC pipes, 2X4’s or an old pallet to store brooms and shovels all winter long. Want to make shoveling a little easier? Spray your shovel with silicone-based lubricant or nonstick cooking spray to keep the snow from sticking. Glide through the snow with (at least a little) ease this winter.

  4. Get the most out of your radiator heat. Place a sheet of tinfoil or a reflective blanket on the wall behind the radiator. This will reflect the heat back into the room instead of it being absorbed into the wall.

Winter comes just once a year (but lasts for about 6 months.) Let’s make the most of it together and enjoy all the season has to offer. Celebrate winter in a way that is truly Canadian: by getting outside and enjoying the snow.
