Begin to clear the clutter by seeing what you have. In the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up Marie Kondo suggests sorting by category, not by room. This means taking all the books in your house and putting them in once place. You can get an accurate look at what you have, what you use and what is taking up valuable space. When you go room by room, often you can miss things (like that blue power suit you put in the basement closet – just in case.)

Assign
Now that you are left with only the things you truly need, you can assign them a home. Some items you may need, but not every day. Think of that old box of paperwork that has been taking up space in your office. Think of summer or winter gear that only gets used when the weather is right. Think of those items too special to let go of, but you don’t need everyday (photo albums, wedding/prom dresses, baby keepsakes.) Contain
From a spice rack to a shoe rack – from a crate to a barrel – from a ring box to a refrigerator box. Store the items you are keeping in a container that makes sense. The first sign of clutter is items loose around your house. Keep it contained.

Review your clutter-status on a weekly or monthly basis. Assess what homes are working for your items and which ones no longer make sense. Make use of your self storage unit when you need it – and don’t forget to swap out those seasonal items.
